Five is broadcasting a match between the New York Yankees and the Chicago White Sox right now. Who watches this boring sport in this country? Worse still, who stays awake till the wee hours to watch a recorded match?! Instead of the NFL and MLB, I'd rather if Freeview British TV broadcast the NHL and NBA (which is broadcast, but only recorded matches at ungodly hours). Those two are the only good and viewable North American sports. In fact speaking of which, the New Jersey Nets will be playing the Miami Heat at London's O2 Arena on October 12. If the tickets are reasonably priced, there'll be a group of us going for that. I've never seen a live NBA game before.
mcgillianaire: (Sachin Tendulkar)
Today is the 35th birthday of India's greatest ever cricketer: Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar.

It's exactly 10 years since he demolished the Aussies at Sharjah, the end of 6 weeks of domination beginning with his first-ever first-class double-century at Mumbai, followed by two centuries in the Test series, and a flurry of other superb performances that contributed to his most successful year as a cricketer. A few weeks later India conducted a series of nuclear tests and earned the wrath of the world. In January 1999, the Outlook magazine published a collector's edition titled: In A Year of Gloom, One Man Brought Happiness to the Nation. You can work out the rest. Jai, jai Sachin Tendulkar! May you live a long life and bring more joy to cricket fans worldwide. :)

A couple nights ago, the Habs (as the Montreal Canadiens ice-hockey team are fondly called) thrashed the Boston Bruins 5-nil in a Quarterfinal playoff to secure a place in the Semifinals. Considering the fact that the Habs have missed out on three of the last five playoffs and have not won the Stanley Cup since 1993 (even though they are the most successful team overall), it was perhaps not unexpected that their fans would rejoice more than usual. But when a bunch of really drunk fans decided to partay it up, I doubt Montreal's police expected to deal with what followed. You really gotta see this video. North Americans already know about it. Former Montrealers will definitely recognize the area. I lived next to the Mr Sub and McDonald's which you can see very clearly for a couple months in the summer of 2003, and I visited the area frequently during the four years I was in North America's greatest city. The perfect advertisement for illustrating why Quebec should not remain part of Canada. Can you imagine the carnage if the Habs go on to win the whole thing?!
