My parents were just in South Africa a month or two ago. They said that their experience was that a lot of the hype about increased danger to tourists turned out to be just that: hype, and that it wasn't really any more dangerous than it has been in the past (they've been to S. Africa a few times before).
But, eh, who knows? Sample space of one (or two), etc.
Anyway, danger (to tourists, or otherwise) is just one of the many dimensions along which one could measure success.
And I am so not qualified to discuss most of them. I'd like to have an opinion (even if just a totally cock-eyed one), but again: don't feel I know remotely enough to comment.
