Randomness

8 blasts in London and the media is up in arms. 350 simultaneous explosions in Bangladesh and it seems like nobody noticed, or cared even. :/ Some say terrorism gains Western publicity only if white civilians are targetted. From an Indian perspective, that is something we've had to learn the hard way.

Meanwhile, it surprised me to learn that the largest immigrant community being evacuated from some of the settlements in Gaza are a group of Jews who originally hail from the north-east region of India. Read more about the Bnei Menashe.

They've outsourced railway timetables, God and medical transcriptions. Now they have a shortage of teachers. Welcome to the world of online tutoring where only "five per cent of the total US online tutoring market is tapped", hence there is a huge potential for Indians to make extra bucks, even if it means staying up late to help a Yank with algebra. :)

And finally, good news if you're Hindu and female. Recent amendments to the Hindu Succession Bill 2004 allow girls to inherit agricultural lands and property. The only hurdle now is to get it passed through parliament. However it must also be noted that the Bill only applies to situations where a will written by the previous owner doesn't specify otherwise. Only time will tell if it makes a big difference.

I'd usually agree with you about the western media not caring about terrorism not directed against the West, but the comparison you make (8 v 350) is not fair; ~25 times as many people were killed in the London blasts as in the Bangladesh ones.

The Bangladesh bombings deserved more airtime, but not as much as those in London.

Fair enough. The exaggeration was obviously intentional, but there have no doubt been several incidents in which (many) more people have died than what happened in London, Madrid, Sharm Al-Sheikh, Morocco but either did not get much airtime, or none at all.

"One dead fireman in Brooklyn is worth five English bobbies, who are worth 50 Arabs, who are worth 500 Africans"

How little coverage did this get?

500 Africans
More like the millions who have been dying in the recent past without much assistance from the West because there's not enough oil (read incentive) there.
