I've just discovered I've got a stack of mates mad for the Socceroos, it really surprised me! But they weird me out by calling it soccer. It's football! Why is my country weird like that?! It's not like we call rugby union and league 'football' so why do we have to call football 'soccer'?!?

Well, good on 'em for winning, football is gaining popularity here, it's the most played amateur club game or something, these days, all little kids play it. A new pro-football league has been launched recently and methinks this'll really help its chances of doing better than the last pro league, oh that was just embarassing! 32 years since Australian was in a football world cup! Insane! Since we tend to dominate every other sport!

We call Aussie Rules 'football', and certainly in Queensland 'football' usually refers to rugby league.

If Australia had been given an automatic qualification to the WC as they should've been in the past, the popularity would've increased manifold, esp since I believe they didn't just deserve to make it, but they would've done fairly well.

Australia is definitely better than some of the junk that makes the World Cup and I hope they do very well next year. It's great your mates have become football mad because it's definitely one of the most exciting, easy-to-learn sports out there.

Despite the moves for the new pro-football league, it'll be interesting to see just how many football professionals still come to make a living by playing in Europe - like Viduka, Kewell etc.

It is possible that we are getting to the end of a golden age of Australian soccer. Most of our national team is past 30. I don't follow soccer enough to say if the next lot are as promising, but at least one article in The Australian a few days ago thought not. So it's just as well we made it this time.

That is true. Oh well, let's see what happens then.
