If Australia had been given an automatic qualification to the WC as they should've been in the past, the popularity would've increased manifold, esp since I believe they didn't just deserve to make it, but they would've done fairly well.

Australia is definitely better than some of the junk that makes the World Cup and I hope they do very well next year. It's great your mates have become football mad because it's definitely one of the most exciting, easy-to-learn sports out there.

Despite the moves for the new pro-football league, it'll be interesting to see just how many football professionals still come to make a living by playing in Europe - like Viduka, Kewell etc.

It is possible that we are getting to the end of a golden age of Australian soccer. Most of our national team is past 30. I don't follow soccer enough to say if the next lot are as promising, but at least one article in The Australian a few days ago thought not. So it's just as well we made it this time.

That is true. Oh well, let's see what happens then.
