The Gods of the Copybook Headings by Rudyard Kipling (courtesy <lj site="livejournal.com" use

A superb poem for the times we live in, particularly the verse copied below. It was originally published in 1919.

Then the Gods of the Market tumbled, and their smooth-tongued wizards withdrew
And the hearts of the meanest were humbled and began to believe it was true
That All is not Gold that Glitters, and Two and Two make Four
And the Gods of the Copybook Headings limped up to explain it once more.

I haven't seen that poem in years. It's one of the few that Dad bothered to learn off by heart, and he always used to recite it to get us to go to sleep when we were younger.
Eventually it became a running gag that he'd start it and we'd refuse to even go to bed.

Haha! Thanks for sharing. :) I have to admit that this is the first time I'd come across the poem.
