Rather tallies with my impression that Materazzi was a bit of a thug. Not, obviously, that Zidane should have risen to the occasion in quite the matter that he did (although even then, Luis Figo wasn't suspended for headbutting Khalid Boulharouz).
None of those clips in any way excuse Zigane's actions.
Materazzi is a hard player, hurts people with his acts... but Zigane was out of play, walked a little away, turned around and deliberately headbutted someone. No game action, just a deliberate choice.
