French adore Zidane headbutt song (BBC News)

Zidane's headbutt has inspired an African-style song that has become a tube de l'été (summer hit) in France, booming out at beaches, campsites and bars.

"By many measures, North Korea is not even the most terrifying country in Asia; that dubious honour belongs to Pakistan." -The Economist :)

Just got back from watching Superman Returns at Paramount's IMAX. It was a new and interesting experience! Kate Bosworth and Parker Posey were the star attractions. Oh, and that funny guy with a red and blue suit.

Meanwhile, I found it rather ironical that a couple months ago, Daniele de Rossi, the Italian midfielder who made his name this World Cup for elbowing the American player, Brian McBride, was actually recommended for the annual FIFA Fair Play Award.

Apparently he admitted to a referee that he scored a goal with his hand during a Serie A match. Luckily for him, his team (AS Roma), went on to win 2-1.

Was it 2 months Materazzi was suspended for punching a player?

Zizou's Moment of Shame

It looks like Materazzi cripples his nipple, Zizou asks WTF mate, Materazzi says that's the nature of the game, Zizou evaluates his options, loses his cool and in a moment of madness, brought out his natural game.

It's the same guy who did a Rooney in 1998, was suspended against Togo and has a history of headbutting opponents in big matches. Think back, 2001 European Cup.

I'll let you decide the final verdict.

WORLD CUP CHAMPIONS 2006! At last, for once in my lifetime...

Congratulations to the crowd for booing Cristiano Ronaldo. It was perhaps the best part of a boring match in which France were content to win 1-0.

Portugal's strikers put in another disappointing effort. For all their possession and goal-scoring opportunities, it's fortunate a team that couldn't score a goal in their last 278 minutes of normal play, didn't make the final.

And to end this post, I share the latest posting on [livejournal.com profile] soccerfans:

Oh, homebound Portuguese team:

Have a safe flight. Hope your plane doesn't dive as much as its passengers do.

FORZA AZZURRI!!!

Holy fuck. What a stunning last few minutes of extra-time. All said and done, Italy had the better chances. Also, where was Klose tonight?

You know you're back in Montreal when there's a shitload of car honking and random yells of appreciation after Grosso's clinical finish and Del Piero's counter attacking knockout punch.

Less than 12 hours ago I was transitting in Frankfurt. I've never seen so many Americans in an airport. Apparently 20,000 Yanks attended the World Cup!

Gross(o) (induces) referee error! FORZA AZZURI! ITALIA 1 - 0 Waltzing Matildas. Waltz your way, little fairies, all the way back to the Underworld.

SGE has done it again. This time he has decided to drop CARRAGHER for CARRICK. WTF?

Apparently England is going to play a 4-1-4-1 formation against Ecuador tomorrow.

It involves, Rooney up front by himself, Carrick holding up midfield & Hargreaves at right-back. Meanwhile Fat Lampard continues to share the attacking role with Stevie G.

Crouch confined to the bench. It's a conspiracy against Liverpudlians!

Harry Kewell scored the most important goal of his life last night and became the fourth Liverpool player to score at this year's World Cup finals.

As happy as I was for him, I wanted Croatia to win.

Italy deservedly beat the Czech Republic. The loss of Koller (and other strikers) proved fatal. Both my teams are through to the 2nd round and have relatively easy games.

(England v Ecuador, Italy vs Australia)

Unfortunately, Italy will be the hurdle between a dream England-Australia final. :)

Despite Steven Gerrard proving time and again that he is the world's best attacking midfielder, a Scottish conspiracy denied England a third-straight victory.

I thought a lot of goals had been scored at this year's Finals than some of the more recent World Cups but apparently I've been proven wrong.

Feel free to fill up the rest of the table. I couldn't be bothered to make it with HTML.

EDIT:
Did anyone else find it interesting that 6 out of 8 teams in Groups A-D qualified for the 2nd round after two rounds of the Group stage, but only 2 teams out of the 8 in Groups E-H?

Brazil 2 - 0 Australia

The game was not fluent till the South Americans took the lead and then it picked up some pace and became interesting. The Aussies will feel a touch hard done but they still have a decent chance of making the next round.

Croatia 0 - 0 Japan

Boring.

Italy 1 - 1 USA

Disappointing. Very disappointing. We drew the game through 2 minutes of absolute madness. It was incredible how many times Toni found himself off-side. WTF. These guys play 50+ club games a season and still cannot break the bloody trap. I'm extremely angry with the way Italy played.

It was also a very physical game. I don't think I've seen so many free kicks in the first few minutes of play, and I watch games week-in, week-out. Di Rossi deserved a red card and so too the first American expulsion. Referees should not tolerate those kind of sliding tackles from behind.

====

Rod Harding, for those who know him, predicts Australia to win 2-0 today. He'll need to get very drunk tonight to come anywhere close to see what he believes.

====

Meanwhile, I applied for a British biometric passport today and hopefully it'll put to rest any future traveling hitches. I even look like the guy in the photo, a point which will receive elaboration in the next post.

Ghana 2 - 0 Czech Republic

My favorite African team has shown the way for the rest of the continent. I missed the first half-hour but from what I saw, the only reason Ghana didn't destroy the Czech's with a worse scoreline was thanks to a missed penalty and a chap called Petr Cech.

Like I told dubaiwalla, for once I actually believe something Mourinho, the coach of Chelski FC, said about Cech. i.e. that Cech's gonna prove he's the world's best at the Finals.
