Billy and Cricket
Jan. 14th, 2004 09:48 pmFairly interesting day @ class today. Great to be back with Bill Valliant for Management Accounting after having him for Financial Accounting last year. Apparently he is not as good content wise with Mmgt as he is with Fine but so far it seems alright. For those who don't know who Billy is, he is our white, Jamaican homegrown, most popular prof. in Management, as voted by the students last year and cricket enthusiast. I guess Cris would say, enough said. As you can imagine, most people here don't have a clue what cricket is, or if they did, how the hell it is played, even @ a basic level of, hit the ball, get runs, get out.
Brought up the recent cricket with Billy @ the end of class and he sounded completely disgruntled with the way things were/are shaping up for the Windies. He went on a fierce condemnation of Lara's captaincy, esp. with regards to the last match where he felt they should've pressed for victory while needing something like 8 an over with the new comer batting well. According to him, guys like Imran Khan, Richie Benaud and Mansur Ali Khan Pataudi would never have made such a decision to give up and play for a draw...
He also mentioned that he had closely followed the India-Australia series. Like several West Indians I have met over the years, he is another big Kumble admirer. I'm not trying to put him down or anything, but it's great to know he does have a good reputation somewhere outside of India! ;-)
I hope to have many more cricketing discussions with him as the year goes by...
He is still very old school - stuck in the day of Sir Garfield and Imran Khan! *lol*
