Does England really exist?
May. 17th, 2005 01:28 pmAccording to the Encyclopaedia Britannica:
England is the predominant part of the United Kingdom, yet constitutionally it does not exist. It is not mentioned in the title of its sovereign. England does not have its own set of official statistics, and in its institutions, it gives the appearance of having been swallowed up in the larger mass of the United Kingdom since the Act of Union of 1807. It sometimes seems that Scotland and Wales have been more successful in retaining or securing their own special institutions. The "Englishness" of England is a quality hard to define, yet there is no doubt it exists!
