What is Diwali/Deepavali?
Nov. 1st, 2005 12:37 amBasically, it's the biggest Hindu festival of the year - our equivalent of what Christmas is to Christians and Eid is to Muslims.
In the West it is identified as the Hindu Festival of Lights, like what Chanukkah is to Judaism.
There are 100s of myths and legends to the origins of this most holy of days, and regardless of what one may believe, it is no doubt the most celebrated occasion in the Hindu calendar.
Many people consider it to be a celebration of good over evil. Unfortunately I have never had the wonderful opportunity to experience Deepavali back home in India, and this will be my fourth consective Deepavali away from family & friends.
Luckily though, I will be going to a local temple and watch some fireworks here in Montreal, for the first time! :)
For those so inclined, a few links to offer you greater insight into the spirit and background to Diwali/Deepvali (as it is called in the South):
