Interesting point about turnout. The received wisdom seems to be that it's close races, rather than a yearning for change, that bring big turnouts: 1992 general election turnout was higher than 1997, after all. However, Labour and the Tories are closer together in policy terms than they've ever been, and I suspect that this has led to a "what difference does it make?" apathy factor which would account for 2005's low turnout.
