And The Oscar Goes To...

Azadnagar shantytown, the 200 acre slum located next door to Mumbai's International Airport. (Taken in April 2007)

I just finished watching Slumdog Millionaire. When I wake up I hope it'll have won the Oscar. And so to AR Rahman. Good night!

Deutschland Warms to Bollywood

A growing interest in Indian films in Germany shows that cinema can be an ambassador of culture. Stuart Forster writes for The Hindu:
In recent years, interest and awareness of Indian films has grown considerably in Germany, despite statistics revealing that only five per cent of the films commercially released in German cinemas come from Asia. Much of the interest in Indian cinema can be attributed to an initiative taken by the television channel RTL2, to provide regular screenings of Bollywood movies. This started in 2004 with the blockbuster Kabhi Khushi Khabhie Gham; watched by almost two million viewers. Since then, screenings, including Mohabbatein and Hum Tum, have drawn audiences of close to a million, a considerable niche in the German market.
It was only a matter of time before Bollywood got a foothold in continental Europe. Rajnikanth has been a star in Japan for years and the Big B is popular in Russia and Egypt. The Indian cinema industry as a whole is a fantastic platform from which to spread Indian culture.

You Are What You Watch: Britain's Favourite DVDs

The Independent got together with LoveFilm, Britain's biggest online film rental company, to analyse the DVD renting habits of its 600,000+ UK subscribers and find out if geography determines our taste in movies. An interesting exercise that discovered that outside London (as was the case with almost every category/movie), the most rented movie in Sheffield is The Full Monty where it is set, Hallam Foe is the most rented movie in Edinburgh, but only 0.5% of LoveFilm members in County Durham have ever rented Billy Elliot.

Other insights include Glasgow renting more titles from world cinema outside London, Birmingham renting more Bollywood outside London, This is England (portraying the 1980s skinhead culture - good movie btw!) being popular in East London where the British National Party has won council seats, but not being so popular in Staffordshire, the director's hometown and another area where the BNP has made gains. It was however a popular choice in nearby Nottingham where a lot of the film was shot. Interestingly, more people rented the low-budget 2006 British thriller London to Brighton, in London and Brighton than any other city. And finally, Manchester consistently rents more porn than anywhere but London. Really... why?! Adult films seem to be popular only in the cities.

Good timing with the article. Only last week I opened a free-trial subscription with Blockbuster's online DVD rental service. So far I've watched The Namesake, East is East and Alfie (the Michael Caine version). All three were brilliant and well worth the hour and a half each. This week I've got cult-movie Quadrophenia and Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy to watch, while awaiting either If (a 1968 satire of English public school life) or Satyajit Ray's The Chess Players (Shatranj Ke Khilari). Make hay while it's free! After the trial is over I'm gonna cancel it and switch to LoveFilm for a month and then decide which one to settle on. I've already got a list of 200+ movies and documentaries I want to watch. At this rate it's going to take a lifetime to get through even a small percentage of them...

Lions for Lambs

Avoid with a 10ft pole. As film critic Roger Ebert put it: "the viewer is under the delusion that it's going somewhere. When we suspect it's going in circles, our interest flags." The movie had potential but Robert Redford wasted his opportunity to cash in.

Just got back from watching Superman Returns at Paramount's IMAX. It was a new and interesting experience! Kate Bosworth and Parker Posey were the star attractions. Oh, and that funny guy with a red and blue suit.

Meanwhile, I found it rather ironical that a couple months ago, Daniele de Rossi, the Italian midfielder who made his name this World Cup for elbowing the American player, Brian McBride, was actually recommended for the annual FIFA Fair Play Award.

Apparently he admitted to a referee that he scored a goal with his hand during a Serie A match. Luckily for him, his team (AS Roma), went on to win 2-1.

Love Actually

My Dad and I went to watch the latest in a line of British romantic comedies. Unfortunately, as expected the good parts were edited but even then, there was an incredible amount of love-making going on there. At one point I wasn't sure if my dad would've preferred watching The Day After Tomorrow. Luckily he enjoyed the movie, or so he mentioned afterwards.

I quite liked it, even though it seemed to meander along mindlessly for a while. There were a few cheesy lines here and there, but for the most part it was a tasteful amalgmation of the Who's Who in modern British cinema. The only notable missing face perhaps, was Michael Caine. Maybe he's too old to make love, actually?

An Update

This week has been pretty eventful so far. Monday afternoon was made up of a plumber fixing up a pipe in my apartment that had been wreaking havoc in the kitchen directly below mine. The next morning none of the hot water taps were functioning so I had to make do with a 2-second cold water shower. Honestly, it was like walking into an icecube scrubber. No could do. Tuesday was boring till the evening when [livejournal.com profile] montrealtess and I attended Reg Alcock's, President of Canada's Treasury Board, talk on modernizing governance and adapting it to the challenges and demands of the 21st century. The chap was cordial and informal but the talk itself was pretty lame.

The next day I walked into my MHR class to find a new chap teaching for the week since my regular prof. is recovering from a gall bladder infection. What a semester she's having. (Earlier she had a swimming accident and paralysed her left arm!) *yikes* That afternoon, Tess and I attended another talk, this time given by the Minister for International Cooperation, Aileen Carroll, on Canadian initiatives being taken in dealing with global health epidemics such as HIV/AIDS and TB. Leacock 232 is quite a room, says I! Inshallah, one day I will also be giving a talk there. *lol*

The 2nd talk was much more informative, very laidback and filled with a fantastic question-answer-period. I'm still not convinced Canada is doing enough but at least there's a start. The failure @ Cancun produced some good dividends later when Brazil and India took the lead, with the help of the WTO but a lot more work remains to be done. Clinton's Fund also seems pretty cool. Oh, and I forgot to mention the movie, [livejournal.com profile] cute_kitty and I went to watch on Tuesday night - Butterfly Effect. I don't think she particularly enjoyed the movie but I thought it was rather nice to see Kutcher act serious for once in his life. ;-)

Anyways, I'm not sure how much you guys particularly like reading long monologues and boring details about my life so I shall s.t.o.p. right heeere!

Cheers!
