the next nine days are going to be habsolute hell pour moi! just too many things coming together @ once and then there's almost nothing going on till the end. well, it's not as black/white as that. i've got 2 group presentations, a midterm, squillions of little and big assignments, readings to do, places to go... you get the picture. :)

on wednesday Ari G is makin' a guest appearance @ my social context presentation. he be the genetically modified, twin brofa of the well known Ali G. for those of you who dont 'ave a clue what the flippin' heck i'm on about, don't bother. i just pity ure blissful ignorance... ;-)

next week is esp. brutal. wish me luck. friday nite tho is v.important for the desis who care bout their cricket. india takes on its bitch @ midnight EST in karachi. this is the first time india will be carryin' out a full series (involvin' tests) in pakistan since 1989. if i'm not mistaken they played a few one days a few years ago, and as much as they're just entertainment flicks, there aint that much entertainment when the two traditional archrivals get together.

till now ive been tryin' to calm myself down and not let the emotional side of things get to me. what tends to happen with these matches is that the supporters get overexcited and eventually treat victory or defeat in a single match as a victory or defeat to the whole country in general. it's just so passionate. and as much as i want a good contest, there's just that little side of me that wouldn't mind seeing pakistan reduced to a cropper. right, so that's highly unlikely but still. at least i've promised myself not to say 'jai hind' anymore cuz it's not encampassing enough of the diversity that makes up my spiritual home and land of ancient heritage.

JAI BHARAT!

Getting all patriotic are we? I don't think Jai Hind is really a bad thing to say. If memory serves me well, the very name Hind came from Arab conquerors being unable to pronounce Sindh ("Without Sindh there would be no Hind," or somesuch was Indira Gandhi's quote when she opened some big-ass Sindhi conference several eons ago). At any rate, from what I understand (and feel free to correct me if I'm wrong), the very name Hindu basically used to mean anyone in India (so you could have Hindu Muslims, for instance), and not the people of a particular faith (or collection thereof, perhaps, given how vaguely defined the word 'Hindu' is). And therefore, Jai Hind, to my untrained mind, does not seem to strike at diversity at all, at least, insofar as India itself is concerned. I think patriotism as a whole is basically a sham, and slogans like this don't help.

Having said that, I would appreciate a crushing Indian victory (not that I really expect one- but I digress one time too many) because this allows me to bug one particular Pakistani friend of mine on campus. Yes, I'm evil.

Patriotic, yes.

Everything you said about the historicness of the Hind term is true, however I was speaking more in terms of its modern day connotations, with which I rightly have issues with. But, what the hell. Bharat is the 'Indian' name for India, so why not eh?

The Brits gave us India and Muslims Hind/Hindustan... let's use Bharat. As for your I think patriotism as a whole is basically a sham, and slogans like this don't help comment, we have another outlet for discussion brewing one day, insha perumal.

Spread the Love - Down with Pakistan! ;-) Jai Patriotic Slogans! *lol*
