In the last post I advertised the Concordia-based Indian Student Association organized Networking Event. It was the first of its kind and as such fairly disorganized and unstructured but an event with great future potential. The highlight of the evening was probably the presence and speech of the High Commissioner of India to Canada, Shyamala B. Cowsik, who it turned out is a native of Pudukottai, Tamil Nadu.
When i went to introduce myself she noticed my name-tag and asked me which place in Tamil Nadu I was in Tamil. She gave a lovely sum-up of Indo-Canadian relations including upcoming visits by Indian Ministers such as Kapil Sibal and Kamal Nath. After the winter, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will also be visiting Canada.
One of the interesting things she mentioned was the supposed fact that more Indo-Canadian trips have taken place in the last EIGHT months than the 10 years before it!!
I quite agree with her when she says that this is an exciting time to be an Indian diplomat in Canada, especially in light of the recent nuclear deal signed between Ottawa and New Delhi.
----
EDIT: The ex-Foreign Minister, K. Natwar Singh, gave a speech @ McGill on 27 September this semester and I JUST found out. That's so embarassing and humiliating to yours truly, Mr. India Shining in Montreal. As it turns out he had lunch with a bunch of Quebecois intellectuals as well as explaining Why India Matters.
