India 0 - 4 Japan

So yeh, we lost another World Cup Qualifying match but it's a lot better than the 0-7 drubbing we got in Saitama, earlier in the year. Anyways, the point is 120,000 fans crammed themselves into the Salt Lake Stadium in Calcutta to watch the match ... not b/c they were there to see India play, of course that was part of it, but because they were there to catch a glimpse of Japan's manager - Zico!!! Apparently, he's treated as a demi-god in football-obsessed Calcutta. Just as cricket wants American sponsorship money, if India were to become big in football (sometime mid-century) then the world can be sure, there's several million people who would fill up stadiums like no other country. Latin American ones included!
So, who's willing to invest with me? :)

Date: 2004-09-09 01:26 pm (UTC)If the ICC do indeed want American sponsorship money, I doubt they would be particularly successful. In fact I doubt that the ICC are particularly optimistic about such chances themselves.
My hope for Cricket lies in China. If they take to Cricket like they've taken to every other sport, perhaps there would be enough money (viewers) floating around to not resort to cheap tricks by the TV networks.
As for soccer in India, there would I'd imagine be better hope for Hockey. After all, everybody knows that India plays hockey, but Soccer isn't a sport that springs to mind when thinking of India.
Of course, if you like a challenge, go for Rugby. Several million more people that want Australia to lose in yet another sport! Despite being completely useless at the sport, Rugby is the second favorite sport of most Sri Lankans (they call it Rugger).
